Are you a fan of classic slasher films? If so, then you know a final girl is the one who fought back and evaded the killer - the only one left standing in the end。 The final girls in this book are based off of characters from slasher films such as A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, and Scream。 They have a group therapy session once a month to help deal with their traumatic experiences。 Lynette, the narrator, doesn’t trust anyone but her plant (yes, really), s Are you a fan of classic slasher films? If so, then you know a final girl is the one who fought back and evaded the killer - the only one left standing in the end。 The final girls in this book are based off of characters from slasher films such as A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, and Scream。 They have a group therapy session once a month to help deal with their traumatic experiences。 Lynette, the narrator, doesn’t trust anyone but her plant (yes, really), so she’s always on high alert and ready to run。 Her worst nightmare becomes real when someone starts going after the members of the support group。 Lynette, armed with her fanny pack and gun, sets out on a mission to save herself and the other final girls one last time。In true slasher film style, The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix was gruesome, nail biting, and heart pounding, yet it was replete with dark humor and over the top moments。 It was a fast-paced, compulsive read full of twists and turns。 I found the premise so unique and fascinating because you never get to see what happens to those final girls when the dust settles and they return to their ordinary lives。 With a satirical eye, Hendrix delves into the aftermath of their trauma and explores what it means to be a fighter and survivor, especially in a world where the media often glorifies such tragedies。There were several gory scenes, so be forewarned if that’s not something you can stomach。 However, if you’d appreciate an homage to slasher films with fierce female characters, then you should definitely read this one! I received an eARC from Berkley Publishing through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

How do I even express the devastating disappointment I feel about this book? I love Grady Hendrix and the concept of this book sounded amazing…。the actual execution is dismal。 The characters are flat or irritating ( depending on which final girl you’re reading about at the time), the plot is convoluted, the pacing sluggish, and the ending requires an enormous amount of suspension of disbelief。 Color me surprised because this author is usually consistent with quality content。 In my opinion, this How do I even express the devastating disappointment I feel about this book? I'm pretty much aware of what a "final girl" is since slasher films are one of my go-to movies, aside from japanese horror movies。 But in case you don't have an idea, final girl is the last woman standing in a horror movie。 She's the one who has survived and outwitted the killer。 And this book tells us what happens to the final girls after defeating their monsters。 I really liked the premise of this book。The Final Girl Support Group meets secretly on a monthly basis。 The group has six members, w I'm pretty much aware of what a "final girl" is since slasher films are one of my go-to movies, aside from japanese horror movies。 But in case you don't have an idea, final girl is the last woman standing in a horror movie。 She's the one who has survived and outwitted the killer。 And this book tells us what happens to the final girls after defeating their monsters。 I really liked the premise of this book。The Final Girl Support Group meets secretly on a monthly basis。 The group has six members, who are all final girls, and Lynette is one of them。 The book is written in her POV and we get to see how her life has drastically changed after what happened to her。 It's still interesting to see the final girls' backstories eventhough they're pretty much based on the 80s slasher movies。 We also see how they deal with their traumas in their own ways。 These characters are flawed and unlikeable but they're all brave, vigilant, and badass。It's my first book by the author and even though it took some time for me to get used to the writing style, I still thought it's great and very gripping。 Some scenes are over the top and unrealistic but these are just some of the elements of a slasher movie。 I appreciated the author paying homage to classic slasher movies like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, and Halloween。I really enjoyed the wild ride。 The twists and turns。 The gory and bloody scenes。 Those moments when I thought I knew things but I didn't。 Overall, this was a very engaging and thrilling read。Check out my other reviews here。 Disclaimer: Thanks to PRH and the author for providing a free digital review copy via NetGalley。 This did not affect my overall opinion of the book。 。。。more

For years, Lynnette Tarkington has done everything to keep a low profile, not to be found and to be absolutely secure in her apartment which is equipped according to her needs: security cameras outside, several locks, a cage to hinder any intruder from getting close to her。 She has a reason to be careful, she is a final girl, the only person surviving a massacre。 She is not alone, there are more girls who share this fate and for more than a decade, they have been meeting regularly in a self-help For years, Lynnette Tarkington has done everything to keep a low profile, not to be found and to be absolutely secure in her apartment which is equipped according to her needs: security cameras outside, several locks, a cage to hinder any intruder from getting close to her。 She has a reason to be careful, she is a final girl, the only person surviving a massacre。 She is not alone, there are more girls who share this fate and for more than a decade, they have been meeting regularly in a self-help group led by Dr Carol。 But now, somebody seems to try to finish what hadn’t been completed before: killing the final girls。 After the first of them has died and Lynnette is attacked in her apartment, she is sure: all the others are in danger and she needs to warn them。 Yet, one question remains: who is the killer?Grady Hendrix’ novel is a roller coaster ride though a kind of teenage horror and splatter movie, just like the ones that were highly popular during the 1990s。 Lynnette, the first person narrator, does not seem to be totally reliable, quite obviously, the events she had to go through did leave some scars, not only on the outside, but much more importantly on her psyche。 She is a bit strange, to put it nicely, or crazy when judging her behaviour from the outside。 Yet, she could be right, somebody might try to kill them, but maybe this also only happens in her head。 As a reader, it takes some time to decide which perspective to take。I absolutely enjoyed the novel, it is just like the movies, fast paced, a bit over the top, some quite scary moments which make it highly entertaining。 However, it is not only a shallow novel, there some depths when it comes to what such an experience does to a victim and also how people react to a single survivor who becomes a popular figure due to such an horrendous cruelty。 There are some cruel horror scenes with a lot of violence, so the novel surely isn’t for everybody, me, personally, I had great fun reading it。 。。。more

If you're a horror lover and especially love slasher movies, then you are probably all too aware of the final girl and what she stands for。 Big respect to them as I surely know I'd be one of the first to die if ever in this type of situation (unless I had a butterfly knife or some deadly chopsticks in my hair or whatever, but I digress)。 Hendrix is one of my fave horror authors。。。 he brings a bit of campy fun to his stories which I absolutely adore。 He does the same here。。。 but it missed the mar If you're a horror lover and especially love slasher movies, then you are probably all too aware of the final girl and what she stands for。 Big respect to them as I surely know I'd be one of the first to die if ever in this type of situation (unless I had a butterfly knife or some deadly chopsticks in my hair or whatever, but I digress)。 Hendrix is one of my fave horror authors。。。 he brings a bit of campy fun to his stories which I absolutely adore。 He does the same here。。。 but it missed the mark for me a bit unfortunately。Hendrix introduces us to final girls that we are familiar with。。。 but flips the script a bit so that we know what he's talking about without it being a straight steal from the books/movies。 Personally, I found this a lot of fun but we never really get any type of dive into these characters outside of some transcripts/notes so we know which one they were。。 make sense? And our protagonist is Lynnette, who lives a life of paranoia, is determined to try and save her final girl "sisters" as they get picked off one by one。。。 again。The premise of this is fantastic。 The slasher/final girl lover in me loooove the references and had quite a bit of amusement in their particular stories。 I do think it got a bit convoluted with all the red herrings bleeding everwhere and lack of actual suspense/terror that you may expect。 Sadly, not my favorite Hendrix but not hateful either。 。。。more

I was hooked from the beginning。 I loved that this took me on a journey through the horror industry and the nostalgia of 80s horror movies。 The Final Girls Support Group showed that some of the final girls were able to move on from what had happened to them, while others drastically changed the way they lived their lives。 Take Lynnette, she is constantly worried that what happened to her might happen again。 Her life has become consumed by what happened to her all those years ago。 But then a fina I was hooked from the beginning。 I loved that this took me on a journey through the horror industry and the nostalgia of 80s horror movies。 The Final Girls Support Group showed that some of the final girls were able to move on from what had happened to them, while others drastically changed the way they lived their lives。 Take Lynnette, she is constantly worried that what happened to her might happen again。 Her life has become consumed by what happened to her all those years ago。 But then a final girl from the support group goes missing, and Lynnette is on a journey to figure out why this is happening。 I thought that the use of multimedia to tell the final girls stories made for a more engaging experience。 Though at times I did find the sudden change from the story to a blog post, abrupt, I enjoyed it。 It wasn't a classic horror story, but if you're feeling nostalgic or love thrillers, I think you'd enjoy it。Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review 。。。more

A tense thrill ride through the eyes of a not so final girl。 Grady Hendrix treats us to a story that will hold your attention tightly and not loosen its grip until you have closed the back cover。The Final Girl Support Group is a modern thriller set post teen slasher movie era。 It follows the activities of Lynnette Tarkington and the rest of a group of ‘Final Girls’ belonging to a support group run by Dr Carol Elliott。 The premise of following the survivors of your typical slasher horror movie is A tense thrill ride through the eyes of a not so final girl。 Grady Hendrix treats us to a story that will hold your attention tightly and not loosen its grip until you have closed the back cover。The Final Girl Support Group is a modern thriller set post teen slasher movie era。 It follows the activities of Lynnette Tarkington and the rest of a group of ‘Final Girls’ belonging to a support group run by Dr Carol Elliott。 The premise of following the survivors of your typical slasher horror movie is a very unique and interesting one。 It provides a unique mental perspective from the survivors of atrocious crimes and in some cases multiple attacks。 Lynette from the beginning seems different to the other final girls and this becomes more and more apparent as the story progresses。 Each final girl survived their attackers and all dealt differently with the aftermath。 Some went on to become rich beyond their wildest dreams, some went on to become recluses, like Lynette and others turned to drink and/or drugs! They all continued to have one thing in common at the end of the day though and that is that they are Final Girls and more than others clutched to this existence more than others。This is my first time reading something by Grady Hendrix and I have to say that I am amazed by his writing。 It can sometimes take a lot to hold me into a story and many books in my past have been put to the side with me saying “I’ll try that again another time” and subsequently never returning。 There were never any worries of that happening with this book。 Once I began reading, I was hooked。 Grady is masterful with storytelling。 Each character has a distinct and interesting personality and backstory that individualises them。 Grady doesn’t allow this to isolate aspects of the story or character from it。 He maintains connections whilst encouraging individuality and this masks for an incredibly interesting read。 I really enjoyed that at the end of each chapter we got to read some extracts ranging from interview notes, news articles and more。 They added a sense of realism into the story。The story doesn't let up and each chapter increases in quality and in mystery。 This book really is one of those ‘just one more chapter’ stories, for me it was more “just 3 more chapters”, and this went up more and more the further I got into the book。 I’m a huge fan of thriller/horror books and this is up there as one of the greats for me! If twists, shocks, suspense and addictive characters are your thing, then please give The Final Girl Support Group a read。 Grady Hendrix really is one to watch and The Final Girl Support Group will be on the bestsellers list come its release。“I used to think it was weird that we met surrounded by Sunday school art, but now it’s the first thing I look at every month after checking my sightlines and my exits。” - Lynette Tarkington。 。。。more

What a great premise for a book and even better it works。 The last surviving girl in a horror event is a final girl。 There is a group of final girls that meet to support each other, since they share a unique experience。 This group weaves the stories of these girls around the actual 80s and 90s flicks of Halloween, Friday the 13th and Scream。 I loved these movies and this genre before it moved to what it is today。 While the book is a solid horror story, it almost seemed like some of the reference What a great premise for a book and even better it works。 The last surviving girl in a horror event is a final girl。 There is a group of final girls that meet to support each other, since they share a unique experience。 This group weaves the stories of these girls around the actual 80s and 90s flicks of Halloween, Friday the 13th and Scream。 I loved these movies and this genre before it moved to what it is today。 While the book is a solid horror story, it almost seemed like some of the references were a little tongue in cheek。 Especially since it references the film series made from their tramas。 Sound familiar?Lynette is a final girl that never feels safe。 And it is alluded to but not fully explained for much of the book, that Lynette is not a true final girl。 I like that you’re never really sure what that means。 While the plot mainly revolves around her and includes the other final girls, you must decide if she is paranoid based upon her experiences or if everything is really happening as seen through her eyes。I must admit the can we trust Lynette is well done。 I spent a lot of time flipping back and forth deciding if she is a reliable narrator。 The suspense was intense and I could not piece together what was happening。 It is a twisty story, sure to surprise you over and over。I am not sure if the book falls short if you are not familiar with or a fan of the old horror genre, but I enjoyed the ride and couldn’t put the book down。 。。。more

My least favorite Hendrix。 It just didn’t have that special something the rest of them have。 Worth a read, but I come to Grady Hendrix for good, clever, funny, well-written, legitimate horror。 This is more of a thriller, and I didn’t connect with any of the characters。 Incidentally, the narration for the audiobook is BAD, I would struggle to give that production even 2 stars。

After loving A Southern Book Groups Guide to Slaying Vampires, I was seriously looking forward to reading The Final Girl Support Group。 The perception and reality, unfortunately, were completely different。 A premise that should have both been intriguing and thrilling, it turned out to be neither。 Something is lacking, be it characters of more substance and grit, racial tropes that don’t belong there and the feminist monologue just didn’t feel genuine and if I’m honest a bit contrived。 The Final After loving A Southern Book Groups Guide to Slaying Vampires, I was seriously looking forward to reading The Final Girl Support Group。 The perception and reality, unfortunately, were completely different。 A premise that should have both been intriguing and thrilling, it turned out to be neither。 Something is lacking, be it characters of more substance and grit, racial tropes that don’t belong there and the feminist monologue just didn’t feel genuine and if I’m honest a bit contrived。 The Final Girls were just girls that had a traumatic event happen to them – I wanted to the raw and unfiltered story of their backstories, we only had Lynette’s story, one narrative。The Final Girl Support Group as mentioned above does well on intention but the reality was weak and without structure。 The character development ultimately had me not caring about the final girls and that should be the last thing intended with a story of such a high concept。 We need to care about what and why this happened to the girls but I ended up just thinking the majority of them were cold and calculated。 I didn’t feel the strength and resilience at being the final girl – I couldn’t imagine any of them killing the murderer。The Final Girl Support Group is a throwback to the ’80s and 90’s slasher flix’s and I think they should have just stayed there。 It is one of the few novels I’ve read in the genre that has left me feeling it would have been better than a movie instead of a book。 There’s gore but there is also cheese in equal measure and it was just too much (the cheese that is。) It’s reminiscent of Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street but the book dragged on in too many places for me to be truly invested in the outcome。The payoff in the novel ended up coming way too late in the story for me to care。 The killer’s motives weren’t revealed until very late on, the way the sequence of the story moved forward didn’t make much sense and by this point, I was left feeling very frustrated at the narrative and the plot。 I was so sick of Lynette by the end I just couldn’t care what happened to her。 How is she even a final girl? She was so weak and anxious。 Suspending disbelief is how I would describe my reading experience with The Final Girl Support Group。 。。。more

I completely ignored the rest of my TBR。 Forgot about my planned schedule and ignored all other commitments until I closed the final page。 If you follow damppebbles regularly you’ll know that I love blood-soaked slasher novels and have a bit of a girl crush on the final girl trope, so this book ticked so many boxes for me as a reader。Six legendary final girls meet in secret with their therapist to talk over their experiences and support each other。 Yes, there are disagreements, fallings out and a lot of bickering, but the women have something which bonds them together and Lynnette, in particular, finds comfort in the meetings。 Until one day, one of the women fails to attend group。 Before long, it becomes clear that their secret meetings are no longer a secret。 Lynnette is convinced someone has their sights set on the group。 Now, all she has to do is convince the others and make it, in one piece, to the end…I loved reading The Final Girl Support Group。 It was a full-on, high energy read which I devoured in no time at all because I found it very hard to put down。 I was a little bit smitten with Lynnette who, because of her experiences, is a smidge traumatised (obsessive, paranoid…goes without saying really!)。 I also found her a little frustrating at times but that only added to my enthusiasm。 The other ‘girls’ are an eclectic, flawed mix and I thoroughly enjoyed finding out their stories。 These aren’t your normal, every-day final girls though。 These six (there should be seven but no one mentions Chrissy…) are the most famous final girls in America and for good reason。 I won’t reveal anymore。 You’ll need to read the book to find out why but I loved all of the detail Hendrix puts into each character。 They’re all beautifully drawn, all different and unique in their own ways, they would be strangers in a different life, but the bond held between these woman is strong。 That connection, that duty to each other, was what I loved most about the book。The Final Girl Support Group has a totally absorbing, relentless pace to it which I adored。 I was completely invested in the story and the characters from the moment I started reading。 I was able to guess one aspect of the plot but I still savoured every minute I spent with this book。 It didn’t spoil my enjoyment at all because there was always more to come, more fantastically placed thrills and spills to make me keep turning those pages late into the night。Would I recommend this book? I would, yes。 The Final Girl Support Group was one helluva ride which I devoured quickly because I couldn’t bear to be parted from it for very long。 I’ve not read a book by Grady Hendrix before but it’s clear this is a writer who knows how to tell a good story。 I was hooked (😂 poor choice of word in a way, perhaps…) into Lynnette’s monstrous world and I didn’t want to leave。 Absolutely flipping bonkers but so, so good! Highly recommended。 。。。more

This was quite the ride! In addition to being a fan of thriller books, I'm also a big fan of horror movies。 To have the two combined sounded perfect for me! That said, I felt like the execution of The Final Girl Support Group was a little off。 The premise sounded awesome - Final Girls (traditionally the last surviving girl at the end of a horror movie, or in this case, at the end of a real life mass murder) get together for therapy, but start being attacked again。 What I struggled with was the f This was quite the ride! If you liked the CW show Scream Queens, you'd probably enjoy this book! It's very campy, over the top, and you'll likely need to suspend disbelief for this one。 I will say that despite the long-drawn out ending, I did enjoy the reveal when all of the pieces of the puzzle fell in place。 This was the first book I've read by Grady Hendrix, and I've been meaning to read some of Hendrix's other work, so I'll be eager to pick those up! I'd like to thank Berkley for my copy of the book。 It was my pleasure to provide an honest review! 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an audio ARC of The Final Girls。2。5 stars。 I really wanted to like this book。 The premise is great, especially for fans of the old-school slasher movies, but it fell short for me。 The characters were not likable (although as more backstory comes out later, they become more developed and slightly more likable)。 I think I may have enjoyed this more in a physical book format, because the narrator was hard to listen to。 There were numerous plot twists, so Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an audio ARC of The Final Girls。2。5 stars。 I really wanted to like this book。 The premise is great, especially for fans of the old-school slasher movies, but it fell short for me。 The characters were not likable (although as more backstory comes out later, they become more developed and slightly more likable)。 I think I may have enjoyed this more in a physical book format, because the narrator was hard to listen to。 There were numerous plot twists, some better than others, and some kind of pointless。 Overall, the idea is great and the idea of the Final Girls support group had so much potential, but this book just wasn’t all I’d hoped。 。。。more

2。5 stars。 I really wanted to like this book but I found it hard to follow。 I think it would have been better as a movie。 If you choose to read this book I would highly suggest writing each “last girls” name down and what their story was if not you will have to keep flipping back。

Having grown up in the 80s and 90s, teen horror movies were a staple。 No sleepover was complete without at least one Freddy/Jason/Michael flick being shown。 So when I heard about The Final Girls Support Group I was very curious - how would this book approaches those hugely popular movies?Well let me tell you I so enjoyed what Grady Hendrix created。 Taking the final girls from the 89s/90s and putting them together in a modern setting was an excellent plot。 I loved seeing how they work through tod Having grown up in the 80s and 90s, teen horror movies were a staple。 No sleepover was complete without at least one Freddy/Jason/Michael flick being shown。 So when I heard about The Final Girls Support Group I was very curious - how would this book approaches those hugely popular movies?Well let me tell you I so enjoyed what Grady Hendrix created。 Taking the final girls from the 89s/90s and putting them together in a modern setting was an excellent plot。 I loved seeing how they work through today’s society and mindsets to try and survive in a time that has vastly changed since their near deadly assaults。Filled with with twists, turns, and some pretty messed up situations, Final Girls Support Group was a tale I didn’t want to put down。 Thank you Netgalley and Berkley for a DRC in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more
